Canadian Payments Association

Playing a leadership role in providing a safe and efficient clearing and settlement system to meet the current and future payment needs of Canadians.

Payments are the lifeblood of the economy.  Every day, Canadians, businesses and governments use a variety of “payment items” to purchase goods and services, withdraw cash from banking machines and to transfer funds from one person to another. These items include online payments, debit transactions, and wire payments to name a few, with the exception of credit card transactions, which are not cleared through CPA systems.

Financial institutions need arrangements to transfer funds among themselves, either on their own behalf or that of their customers. This happens through clearing and settlement systems.

The Canadian Payments Association was created by an Act of Parliament to establish, maintain and operate a national system for the clearing and settlement of payments. On average, some 22 million payment items, representing approximately $202 billion in transactions, were cleared and settled through the CPA’s systems each business day during 2008.
